My scar

This project was on identity, I have done a few projects on myself but never my scar. Which is why I am here today. I thought this was a great opportunity to get answers to my questions. As cringy as it sounds I wanted to build a relationship with my scar.

Self Portraiture

It all took place in my university accommodation a home made studio if you will. The aim was to creat an overview appearance of the scar.

My research came from many independent people but also well known brands.

Such as; Behind The Scars by Sophie Mayanne, Altered by Manan Ouimet, Gestures of Demarcation by Melanie Manchot, Scarred For Life by Ted Meyer and #showus by Dove.

Experimenting

This image was inspired by Georgie Wileman where I created my own interpretation. Individuals joined Georgie’s campaign using Explore the project here . I added the date that my surgery took place with in the space of my scare using a black pen.

Up Close & personal zine

I collected many close up images of my scar. I wanted to capture the texture showing the viewers it’s true appearance. The zine allows the viewer to follow the scar from ear to ear. Seeing that the width and shape is not the same throughout the line.

I pursued this project 2 years later

This time I used the technique Scanography. Should I add items around myself ?… I don’t want all the images to appear the same. It is like my scar has come back even though it never left. It pops out to say “hi”.
